1.
Soil, substrate of time, weathered from rock into fine Needed your care and love so rare, attention as experience takes over And how does your garden grow. Air, invisible and pure, granted, taking it for sure Suck it in let it out, from the heart dedication no doubt And how does your garden grow. Hear you’re growing food for the soul, there’s love in every bite Your old wrinkled hands really bringing on the life. You’re singing songs while you’re sowing seeds Such a basic occupation when there’s mouths to feed Deliberate regard for old mother earth Seeds in your hand you know what they’re worth. Water straight from that cloud, magic can’t help but wonder how Subsistence I’m back to feeding my soul Take a leaf from this book do not overlook…

Jacky Winter 04:04
How’s the air up there Jacky Winter Is the view all it’s meant to be I see you soar into a cloud Of your skill I have no doubt What’s this game you play Jacky Winter? Take a dive in the air Jacky Winter A little fly passing by your beak Scrummy morsel now and then Stay away from that swamp hen What’s this game you play Jacky Winter? I saw you in the springtime with the indigo bloom Last time I heard you, you were leaving us in the month of June That’s way too soon (by that old wintry moon) A little grub from the scrub Jacky Winter Nice and plump in your tum for sweets Catch a glimpse of a fat old tick Something new for your young chick What’s this game you play Jacky Winter?

Driftin' 06:33
There you are hugging that park bench Just barely keeping it all together I briefly saw the sun reflecting off your teardrops I saw the anguish in the lines on your forehead. And even now I start slippin’, I find myself drifting away with you. I went this way, you went the other Just like lovers sometimes will It doesn’t mean that you’re not in my heart dear It doesn’t mean that I don’t really care. And even now I start slippin’, I find myself drifting away with you. I remember loving you dearly And the passion in our play The sun would shine when you whispered to me The things this man loved to hear.

Caught a glimpse of her running down the Firebreak Track She looked worn out and out of breath she never looked back I said now Ruby what you running from With that daughter in your hand, the other your son And that string of pearls around her neck just glistened in that blood red sun. I’m tired, I’m tired, I’m so, so tired But how’s that I can’t sleep, he’s got me so wired I got my future here holding my hand Gonna be a long time till I need another man And this string of pearls around my neck bears witness. I wonder what you’ll say or do I wonder if your heart is true I wonder if your life and mine will cross paths again. She said brother I’m chasing some peace of mind Life ain’t long, I’m nearly out of time Just one thing you can do for me Tell that bastard that I’m finally free And that string of pearls around her neck just guides a beating heart.
5.
Twilight in your eyes, reflects a perfect day I light a fire hoping it will shine. Whisper a word that sounds like apology Tremble an emotion that hurts deep down in your throat But we both see the need to enlighten each other’s heart We talk of unimportant things, skirting between facts. Sunrise in your eyes, reflects your deepest thoughts I feel your warmth knowing it will shine. Surrender your head while your heart beats in sympathy Inspire your senses to jump down off that fence But we both feel the need to enlighten each others heart I see determination burnin’ inside your soul. Feel your heartbeat Follow your footstep Believe in your forecast Trust in your eyes.

In Exile 05:47
I’m sitting here in exile while the world passes me by Ain’t no one here to laugh with, ain’t no one gonna see me cry No arguments, no sentiments, no hellos and no goodbyes I’m contemplating exile while this world slowly wanders by. Got time on my hand to sit and wonder at the sky A little blue, mostly cloud slowly ambles by A cold wind blows from the west and I hear a bow break Chase that sound here in exile ‘cause time will wait. There’s a creekside spot in the forest where them river stones glow Been there once long ago when my hair wasn’t snow Might take an effort, but worth it, this memory unfolds Better than sitting here in exile watching this world put on hold. Be patient my friend and work out something on your own Be aware be assured any mistake you make is yours and yours alone That pride in yourself has a chance to grow by strides While your tinkering here in exile waiting for a new world to come on by. Wind whisper to me a tune almost forgotten Now you’ve focused your eyes It’s time to leave them open. There’s a sigh of relief as mother earth renews her claim She ain’t finger pointing, she’s much too wise to lay blame But her expectations of us so clear for all to see Just use this time here in exile to discover nothing here is free.
7.
You live on an island full of trees You feed the birds and the bees Your scent is subtle and rare Your blossom colours your hair. There’s a new smell that blows from the east It’s a change that repeats and repeats It’s a stranger in your cracked mirror Blood kin, your very own chimera. Banyalla darlin’, I hear you lost your home Banyalla darlin’, you got no place to go Banyalla darlin’, banyalla darlin’ Now you got no place to go. Your border has been breached on all sides Nowhere to run, you got little chance to hide Your birds now sing a sorrowed tune Your life now dark like a brand new moon. So rare, you’re mother nature’s daughter Forlorn, like a lamb to the slaughter Your children, survive as they must But your beauty is now gone with the dust.
8.
You know the water goin’ down (down in the ground) Ain’t no bird to make a sound (water goin’ down) That’s why I’m headin’ into town (water goin’ down) Chance of rain are slim to none Come one day it won’t be long You better pack your bag boy yonder kingdom come ‘Cause you ain’t seen what I seen. That’s why I’m prayin’ for some rain (like we had before).
9.
Away, away, the southern cross now guides your way Your weary head now rests instead, I hear you say. Your love has spread its wings, Your heart, like a bird it sings. So fare thee well, my darlin’ one. So fare thee well, my darlin’ one. Fare thee well. (for Joanne Catherine Robinson)

Riverstone 07:35
I stubbed my toe, didn’t watch where I go I sat right down in the shallows just watching this river flow. Pain soon forgotten as my eyes sort of focused On something unbelievably beautiful just out of reach. Your eyes shine like this riverstone Deepest heart and shades of roan Might ask mother nature for a loan To share this little riverstone. I dragged it out with my foot from that babbling brook A stone amongst many stones I might have overlooked So smooth so warm, a joy to hold in my hand My thoughts come back to you lying in the sand (in your mother’s arms). Two beauties to behold One is sandstone the other pure gold I just want to take you home And share this little riverstone.

about

The Otway Ranges of southwest Victoria evoke visions of lush ancient forests, waterfalls cascading past giant tree ferns and secluded picturesque communities. If you dig a bit deeper, you’ll discover these communities have thriving music scenes reflecting life in these hills. Mountain Grey has perfected a style of music that IS the Otways. They serve up stories that tug at the heartstrings; songs of loss and discovery, beauty and innocence, a love of Mother Nature and a desire to try and understand how we all bloody fit into this weird old world.
Listen closely to their latest offering, Riverstone Suite. Each song inspires a musical journey for the listener. Some say it’s ‘eclectic, yet accessible’. What?! Others, a ‘fusion of roots, blues and jazz’. Huh?! If pushed, the band might simply call their music folk rock, but with atmosphere, exploration, space and, well, rhythm and melody. Within the album are stories conjuring images of rain dripping off trees, of heartache and isolation, a morning chorus, giggling grandkids, the sear of a north wind and the relief of a southwest change. The music is real and from the heart. Life.
Fifteen years of playing together shows in Mountain Grey's relaxed and seamless sound. Mike Robinson-Koss (lead vocals/harmonica/lyrics) has the troubadour's gift of bringing words and music together in lyrical narratives. Guitarist Steve James’ intuitive fretwork lifts songs of melancholy and delivers innovative soundscapes. Luke Hynes’ melodic electric bass playing never loses that important bottom end and together with ‘The Reverend’ Kev Foster on drums and vocals, provide musical imagery skirting between every emotion.
Their 3rd album, Riverstone Suite is an hour long collection of ten songs featuring a number of guest artists including Josh Rigg (electric guitar), Kym Kelaart (hammond organ), Ian Hergstrom (soprano sax), Mark Fagan (flute) and Tobias Johnson (piano). This collaborative album gives every musician room to explore and add their own touches to a sound that hits you in the heart and soul. Check it out, you will be moved by the experience.
Riverstone Suite will be available on CD in all good general stores and music shops across this wide brown land. If the band can work out the technology, digital downloads will be available on Bandcamp.
